Safe Shallows

0m – 100m

Kelp Forest
lowA dense forest of towering Creepvine plants adjacent to the Safe Shallows. Rich in Creepvine-based resources and populated by Stalkers.
0m – 100m

Dead Zone
extremeThe open ocean beyond the map boundaries. Completely devoid of resources and flora — but home to three massive adult Ghost Leviathans. Entering the Dead Zone triggers a distress signal urging the player to turn back.
0m – 8000m

Dunes
extremeA vast, sandy outer biome northwest of the crash site. Visually sparse but extremely dangerous — home to multiple Reaper Leviathans and key wrecks containing vehicle fragments.
0m – 500m

Mountains
extremeA dramatic biome of towering underwater peaks northeast of the crash site. Location of important wrecks and the Alien Arch leading to the Mountain Island. Patrolled by Reaper Leviathans.
0m – 500m

Aurora
extremeThe crashed Alterra Corporation spacecraft that dominates the northeast of the map. The Aurora is a vast explorable location containing multiple distinct sections: the Cargo Bay, Locker Room, Prawn Bay, Drive Core, and Living Quarters. It leaks radiation until the Drive Core is repaired. Patrolled by Warpers inside and Reaper Leviathans outside.
0m – 30m

Mushroom Forest
lowA stunning biome filled with enormous glowing Mushroom Trees. Located near the Underwater Islands. Home to the Sea Emperor Leviathan's breeding site.
80m – 300m

Grassy Plateaus
mediumA wide mid-depth biome covered in sea grass with sandy outcrops and varied terrain. Home to Sandsharks and an excellent source of Silver Ore.
100m – 300m

Sparse Reef
lowA transitional biome at the southern edge of the play area. Relatively barren compared to other biomes but home to several wrecks and moderate resources.
150m – 300m

Blood Kelp Zone

200m – 500m

Underwater Islands
mediumA biome of enormous rock formations suspended in mid-water by gas pockets. Rich in resources and a key waypoint for players heading toward the Mountain Island.
200m – 400m

Bulb Zone
mediumA biome characterized by large orange bulb plants that emit warm light. East of the Aurora wreck. Good source of Rubies and the habitat of the Crabsquid.

200m – 500m

Jellyshroom Caves
highA spectacular underground cave system beneath the Safe Shallows, lit by enormous glowing Jellyshrooms. Home to the Crabsnake and a key source of Magnetite.
200m – 400m

Sea Treader's Path
mediumA deep trench biome named for the Sea Treader Leviathans that migrate through it. Their footsteps expose Shale and Limestone Outcrops — making following their path an excellent resource-farming strategy.
250m – 500m

Lost River
extremeA vast, bioluminescent underground river system deep beneath the ocean floor. Contains the body of an Ancient Skeleton, Ghost Leviathan juveniles, and is the only location for Nickel Ore and a gateway to the Lava Zones.
500m – 1000m

Inactive Lava Zone
extremeA cooled volcanic biome below the Lost River, characterized by hardened lava formations and extreme heat. The only location for Kyanite and home to the Sea Dragon Leviathan.
900m – 1300m

Active Lava Zone
extremeThe deepest biome in Subnautica. Filled with flowing lava rivers and the Primary Containment Facility. Location of the final story beats and most dangerous creatures.
1300m – 1700m
